Celebration under way

The two-day celebration to honor America on the Fourth of July and open some major projects at Crystal Beach Park got under way Friday morning.

Several hundred people were scattered through the park visiting the various booths, taking a pedal boat trip on the lake or listening to some live performances.

At the same time, crews were putting on some finishing touches to prepare for the Friday night concerts that kick off with Bo Phillips followed by Mike McClure, Asleep at the Wheel, Tanya Tucker and Stoney LaRue.

That's just a prelude to a full day of activities on Saturday that start at 7:30 a.m. and run thorughout the day and night. The highlights include an Independence Day address by former President George W. Bush and a high-powered fireworks show.

The Crystal Beach Aquatic Center will also open and there will be a recognition of the 80th anniversary of Crystal Beach Park, which is midway through a $25 million renovation project approved in December of 2006 by voters.
