Museum hoping to capitalize on holiday event

Planning to attend former President George W. Bush’s July 4th address?

You can go decked out in a special “Let Freedom Ring 2009” commemorative T-shirt and help your community out at the same time.

The Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum is selling the T-shirts in the hopes that the museum can raise some funds while celebrating this historic moment for Woodward, according to Museum Director Robert Roberson.

“The museum’s board decided that since it’s an event that’s once in a lifetime, having a former President come to Woodward, then it would be a good time to capitalize on and earn some money for the museum,” he said.

“We’re hoping to make a lot of money,” Roberson said, noting that proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts will go toward “general operations to help keep the museum’s doors open during these tough economic times.”

Roberson offered some words of appreciation to event promoter Landon Laubhan, noting that Laubhan is “foregoing his $2 fee per shirt since we are a non-profit.” This means the museum will be able to keep more proceeds from the sale of the shirts, he said.

The T-shirts are already available for sale at a price of $20 each, including tax.

In addition to the museum, the shirts will also be available at Dr. Roger Hammerstrom’s chiropractic office and at the main branch of the Stock Exchange Bank, Roberson said, noting that Hammerstrom and Lisa Hoge at the bank are both members of the museum’s board of directors.

Currently there are only adult sizes available, however Roberson said youth sizes will go on sale in the next week or so once the printer has completed them.

During the “Let Freedom Ring” event on July 3 and 4, the shirts will also be available at the Blue Water Grill concessions stand at Crystal Beach Park.

In addition to selling the T-shirts in honor of “Let Freedom Ring 2009,” Roberson said the museum will be extending its hours of operations on July 3 and 4 until 8 p.m. to accommodate more of the visitors that will be coming to town.
