Trojans win on opening night

Woodward, Okla. — MUTUAL – Sharon-Mutual signalled its intention to be a factor in the 2010 high school football season Friday night.

The Class C Trojans used a big-play running game to upend Class B Seiling, a team ranked in the top 10 of some polls, 34-16. The Trojans performance gave Chris Syms a victory in his debut as head coach.

Timmy Lieswald scored 2 touchdowns and Cody Cottom and Braden Neill 1 each for the Trojans. Neill’s score came on a pass from Weston Free, who also had a 28-yard touchdown run late in the game.

Seiling scored first as Tyler Flowers capped a 74-yard opening drive with a 4-yard run. The extra point made it 8-0.

Sharon-Mutual answered early in the second period on a 3-yard run by Lieswald. The extra point failed. After getting a stop on defense, the Trojans scored again. Free’s 49-yard run set up an 9-yard touchdown by Cottom. Free got the extra point run for a 14-8 lead.

Lieswald had a 3-yard touchdown in the third period to make it 20-8.

Seiling countered with a score and extra point to get within 20-16, but the Trojans put the game away with a pair of 4th quarter touchdowns.

Sharon-Mutual goes to Timberlake next week.

GEARY – Top-ranked Shattuck (Class C) battered Geary 58-16 in the season opener for both schools here Friday.

Kade Young ran for 2 touchdowns and passed for 2 more to lead the Indians, who led 36-0 at halftime and controlled the second half as well.

Young had runs of 27 and 48 yards. Aaron McCandless caught a 76-yard touchdown pass and Conner Babcock had a 32-yard touchdown reception. McCandless also had a 50-yard run and Babcock a 2-yard run.

Cory Floyd and Kaden Schick had the other Shattuck touchdowns.

Shattuck had 540 yards in total offense.

The Indians host Balko next Friday.
