ALTUS – The Boomers pulled away in the fourth period to defeat Altus 64-48 in a Western Conference basketball game here Saturday evening.
Woodward raised its conference record to 8-0 and overall mark to 15-3 with four games left in the regular season. The Boomers are ranked 11th in the coachesaid.com Class 4A boys poll and 15th in okrankings. com.
Altus won the girls game 49-31 as the Boomers fell to 4-14.
The boys game was a battle most of the way.
Altus jumped out to a 9-2 lead early, but the Boomers rallied behind Seth Heckart and Chaunce Carrico to take a 28-23 halftime advantage. Heckart hit a three at the buzzer to give the Boomers momentum heading into the locker room.
In the second half, Altus rallied and took a brief 35-34 lead that was erased on buckets by Carrico and Heckart.
The Boomers led 40-37 going into the fourth period.
They quickly extended the lead on a three-pointers by Heckart and Carrico, who combined for over 50 points on the night.
Another bucket by Carrico stretched the lead to 48-37 and the closest Altus could get down the stretch was eight points.
The Boomers sealed the win by hitting 12 fourth quarter free throws and for the game they were 19 of 28 from the foul line. Carrico, Drake Smithton and Shawn Hunter all converted from the line in the fourth quarter.
The Boomers have won 6 in a row.
The Altus boys fell to 7-9 on the season.
In the girls game, the Boomers trailed by just four at halftime, but Altus used an 8-2 run to take a 24-14 lead and the Bulldogs hit free throws in the fourth period to keep the Boomers from mounting any kind of comeback.
Altus converted 14 free throws in the final minutes.
Ebony Nelms led Altus with 18 points. Mikala Wynn had 9 to pace Woodward. Michelle Estep scored 8 and Haylee Bates 7.
The Boomers begin a three-game homestand on Tuesday against Clinton, then host Elk City on Friday for homecoming and Cache on Saturday.
In area action on Saturday, the Leedey girls beat Vici 57-46 and the Fargo boys beat Vici 53-44 in the 270 Conference title games. Also, Mooreland beat Ringwood twice.
The Lady Bearcats won 55-23 wiethe Kylea Wilson scoring 13 points and Sarah Patton 9.
The boys took a 77-68 win. Cody Kenny led with 20 points, Dustin Searcy scored 18 and Austin Delong 16.
