Deer Creek-Lamont beats Shattuck in Class C quarterfinals, ending Indians' 93-game winning streak

SHATTUCK – For the first time in seven years, there will be a new champion in Class C football.

Deer Creek-Lamont made two first-half touchdowns stand up and the Eagles knocked off No. 1-ranked Shattuck, 16-12, Friday night at Indian Field.

The loss ended Shattuck’s record-setting winning streak at 93 games and halted the Indians’ bid for a seventh consecutive state championship.

It was Shattuck’s first loss since the 2002 state semifinals when the Indians fell to Pond Creek-Hunter.

Since then, they had taken on every opponent - 93 in a row - and dispatched each one.

Until Friday.

Derric Richards scored one touchdown and passed for another as the Eagles overcame an early Shattuck touchdown and took a 16-6 lead midway through the second period.

The Eagles spent the rest of the game holding off the Indians.

Shattuck drove inside the 20 in the final minute of the first half but was stopped just short on a fourth and one at the 15.

In the third quarter, the Indians started on the Eagles 34 after a short punt and got a first down at the 21 but stalled.

After recovering a fumble, the Indians were stopped again on fourth down near midfield. They forced a punt and after a penalty started on their own 8-yard line.

Five plays later they were in the end zone. Brent Starbuck’s 36-yard run got the drive started, then the senior running back connected on a halfback pass to Kelby Schick for a 52-yard touchdown to get Shattuck close at 16-12. The extra point try failed.

The score came with 7:54 left in the game.

Shattuck’s defense then forced a punt and the Indians started what turned out to be their final possession at their own 39.

Runs by Starbuck and Conner Babcock got a first down inside DCLA territory, but two running plays lost a yard and third and fourth down passes were incomplete.

DCLA took over on its 45 and proceeded to run out the clock, picking up three first downs to seal the win and start the celebration.

Shattuck took a 6-0 lead by going 67 yards in 10 plays on its first possession. Passes of 12 and 26 yards from Babcock to Starbuck set up a 3-yard touchdown by Theo Rea. The extra point, though, failed.

DCLA came right back with a 65-yard scoring drive capped by Richards’ 5-yard run. Lawson Thompson passed to Richards for the conversion and 8-6 lead.

In the second period, Richards took a pitch from Thompson, then passed back to the quarterback for a 10-yard touchdown. Thompson’s conversion made it 16-6.

DCLA, 10-2, will play Timberlake in the semifinals next week.

Shattuck ends at 11-1.

“I’m proud of our kids,” said Shattuck coach Troy Bullard. “I love every one of them.”

In a touching, emotional scene, the Indians were greeted with a standing ovation from their family, friends and fans as they finished their team meeting.
