Boomers open 4A-1 play on road

Woodward, Okla. — PIEDMONT – Two teams with playoff aspirations meet tonight in the District 4A-1 opener.

The Boomers and Piedmont both expect to challenge for a playoff berth this year. The winner of this game will certainly have a leg up on that quest.

Through the non-district games, Piedmont is 2-1 while the Boomers are 1-2.

After losing big (52-13) to unbeaten Deer Creek in week one, the Wildcats beat Harrah and Western Heights, both winless teams, by a combined 76-32 margin.

The Boomers come into the game off a nice victory over Northwest Classen at Taft Stadium last week. In its best offensive night of the season so far the Boomers put up 28 points and moved the ball on the ground and in the passing game.

“Piedmont is really playing well right now,” said Boomer head coach Darris Servis. “Our kids know they are going to have to show up and play their best game.”

Servis said the Wildcats have gone to more of a spread offense after running quite a bit out of the I-formation last season.

Brett Adams has stepped in at quarterback and directs the offense

The Wildcats have also been buoyed by the return of running back Darrius Burris, who missed the first 2 games.

He’s big, fast and can go,” said Servis.

On the receiving end Christian Foster and Steffen Funkhouser are the 2 main threats.

Defensively, the Wildcats will be in a 4-man front most of the time and they rely on an active group of linebackers led by Darryl Burns.

The Boomers have used multiple running backs this year and get production from both Jake Hughes and Micah Kee at quarterback. Kyler Ferguson has 2 touchdown receptions.

On defense, the Boomers were hit by some big plays last week but otherwise have played well most of the time.

“We’ve got to continue to keep moving forward and improve,” said Servis of his young squad.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

If you’re going. . .

Directions to stadium: From Okarche, travel East on Highway 3 until you come to the stoplight at Highway 4/Piedmont road.  Go North on Highway 4 into Piedmont.

Once in Piedmont on Highway 4, travel about one mile North of Jackson Avenue (you will see the First Baptist Church on your left hand side at Jackson Avenue).  When you see the Piedmont primary school, you will turn left on the next road on the North side of the Primary school.  (there are two streets together, be sure to take the first one, the second one goes in to an apartment complex).            As you travel West, the road will veer to the right.  Only buses are allowed to park South of the stadium, all fans need to park on the East end of the field.

From Piedmont (Woodward's softball team also plays in Piedmont today): “If your parents, fans, and or supporters  come to the softball game and want to attend the  football game we will stamp their hand after they have paid at softball and only charge them $3 to get in, and then they will be able to show that stamp over at football and they will be allowed in for $3. That saves them $4.   Please just make sure they know to say that as they enter the softball field for the game.”

The area schedule tonight has a number of district matchups.

In A-1, the unbeaten Mooreland Bearcats host Oklahoma Bible Academy and Okeene visits Fairview.

In B-1, the Laverne Tigers go to Ringwood while Seiling is at Waukomis and Canton welcomes Covington-Douglas.

In C-1, Buffalo travels to Shattuck, Tyrone visits Forgan and Waynoka hosts Balko. Sharon-Mutual is in a non-district contest at Timberlake.

Game time everywhere is 7:30 p.m.

Mooreland will be trying for a 4-0 start to the season. The Bearcats will also be looking to continue to build momentum for a key game at Texhoma next week.

Mooreland is coming off a 33-0 win over Burn Flat-Dill City a week ago as the Bearcats were effective in all phases of the game. Brice Gregory threw for 141 yards and Brayden Holloway had 124 yards rushing.

Defensively, the Bearcats have allowed just 21 points all season.

Sharon-Mutual is looking for its 3rd victory in 4 games while Timberlake is just 1-2 this year.

Laverne, ranked No. 1 in Class B, could face a decent road test from Ringwood.

Shattuck will try to bounce back from a loss to Forgan last week while Buffalo is working on a 2-game winning streak. Forgan is looking for a 4-0 start against a Tyrone team coming off a loss.
