WHS, area teams in softball tourneys

Woodward, Okla. — It’s another tournament week for many area softball teams

The Woodward Boomers get under way tonight in Weatherford while the small-school Leedey Invitational kicks off today.

Beginning Friday, Beaver and Forgan will co-host the 2010 Panhandle Shootout.

The Boomers’ bracket in the 16-team I-40 Classic being played in both Weatherford and Clinton, was changed on Tuesday.

Instead of opening up against Mangum and former coach Brady Maxwell, the Boomers will face the host Eagles in a 6 p.m. game in Weatherford. Win or lose, the Boomers will play again tonight at 7:30 p.m. against Binger-Oney or Hobart.

Other first round games at Weatherford have Anadarko against Indiahoma, Elk City against Arapaho, Mangum against Snyder and Burns Flat-Dill City plays Frederick.

In Clinton, the host team faces Seiling and Altus takes on Merritt.

The entire tournament moves to Weatherford for the Friday and Saturday games.

The Boomers take a 7-1 record into the tourney after beating Alva 10-0 on Tuesday.

Woodward last played Weatherford in the regional tournament a year ago and defeated the Lady Eagles.

The Leedey Tournament opens at 12:15 p.m. today with Vici facing Cheyenne. Mooreland takes on Arnett at 1:30 p.m. and Shattuck plays Sharon-Mutual at 2:45 p.m. and top-seeded Hammon plays Lookeba-Sickles at 4 p.m. Leedey, Geronimo and Sentinel received first-round byes.

Mooreland sports a 7-0 record after sweeping a doubleheader at Fairview on Tuesday. Mooreland won the first game 16-9 and the second 8-4.

The tournament runs through Saturday.

The panhandle tournament begins Friday with pool play at Beaver and Forgan.

At Beaver, the schedule is: Beaver vs. Fort Supply, 12:30 p.m.; Hooker vs. Guymon, 2 p.m.; Beaver vs. Guymon, 3:30 p.m., Hooker vs. Fort Supply, 5 p.m.; Beaver vs. Hooker, 6:30 p.m., Guymon vs. Fort Supply, 8 p.m.

At Forgan: Forgan vs. Turpin, 12:30 p.m., Buffalo vs. Laverne, 2 p.m.; Forgan vs. Laverne, 3:30 p.m.; Turpin vs. Buffalo, 5 p.m.; Forgan vs. Buffalo, 6:30 p.m. and Laverne vs. Turpin, 8 p.m.

Single elimination bracket play begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Beaver. All 8 games will qualify for the bracket.
