Boomers fall to 0-2 on season

Woodward, Okla. — Garden City took advantage of good field position to score a pair of touchdowns and defeat the Boomers 17-7 at Boomer Stadium Friday night.

The loss dropped the Boomers to 0-2 while Garden City, a Class 6A team out of Kansas, evened its record at 1-1.

Grayson Tempel and Brady Bean had touchdowns for the Buffaloes and Rudy Chavez kicked a field goal.

Woodward’s only points came from its defense when Kaleb Roach picked off a Tempel pass and raced 38 yards into the end zone for the touchdown. Jesus Munoz added the extra point.

That trimmed the lead to 10-7 early in the third period, but the Boomers were unable to get any closer.

Garden City put the game away on Bean’s 4-yard run later in the third period that capped off a short 25-yard drive.

The Boomers struggled to move the ball the entire game and were also saddled with bad field position much of the night.

Woodward’s defense turned away an early Garden City threat, but the Buffaloes pieced together a 53-yard scoring drive that ended with Tempel’s 9-yard run.

Chavez kicked a field goal later in the period to make it 10-0.

The Boomers had a scoring chance late in the half and Munoz was just short on a 47-yard field goal attempt.

Two Garden City players were taken to the hospital during the game due to injuries.

The Boomers will try to break into the win column next week as they travel to face Northwest Classen in  their first road game of the season.
