Boomers win thriller at Elgin

Woodward, Okla. — ELGIN – Jesus Munoz kicked a 27-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining to give the Boomers a 37-35 win over the Owls in District 4A-1 football Friday night.

Munoz’ kick ended a wild game that saw Elgin score twice in the last 6 minutes to erase a 34-21 deficit and take a 35-34 advantage with 1:55 remaining.

The Boomers improved to 2-1 in district play and are tied for second place with Piedmont, Clinton and Weatherford. Anadarko is 3-0 in the district after its 28-21 win over Clinton on Friday.

In a game that went back and forth all night, Elgin took a 3-0 lead, but the Boomers went up 7-3 on a 2-yard run by Ky Merriman.

A 69-yard punt return for a score regained the lead for the Owls.

The Boomers scored the next 2 touchdowns on runs by Xavier Vo and Dakota Taylor to go up 20-9. Elgin scored late in the half to make it 20-15.

In the third period, the Owls regained the lead briefly at 21-20, but the Boomers got back ahead on a 1-yard run by Taylor, then stretched the lead to 34-21 after Taylor’s 34-yard run and the extra point kick by Munoz.

The Boomers finished the game with 384 yards in total offense, 329 of it coming on the ground. Elgin had 358 yards in offense.

Woodward, 3-3, overall, will host Cache for homecoming next week.
