Douglass turns away Boomers, 78-66

Woodward, Okla. — EDMOND  - A standing room only crowd at the Oklahoma Christian University Eagles Nest saw a gem on a Class 4A quarterfinal basketball game Thursday night.

Unfortunately for the Boomers, they came up on the short end as No. 1 Douglass posted a 78-66 victory to remain unbeaten at 27-0. The Boomers end their season at 23-5.

In a game fit for the championship round rather than the first round, both teams showed their skill and heart with one grabbing the lead and the other constantly answering with a run.

Douglass led throughout the second half, but couldn't put the Boomers away until the final two minutes.

Down 50-36 early in the third period, the Boomers cut the gap in half to trail 53-46 going into the final quarter.

Douglass extended its lead to 60-49 with 6 minutes left on a layup by Ramond Jenkins, but the Boomers weren't finished.

Two three-pointers by Seth Heckart, who led all scorers with 26 points, then a short jumper by Heckart and jumper by Chaunce Carrico, the only senior on either team who saw the floor, cut the Trojan lead to 60-59, capping a 10-0 Boomer surge.

Romond Jenkins, who had 19 points, scored for the Trojans then freshman Stephon Clark buried a trey to make it 65-59. Clark had 21 points on 7 treys.

Drake Smithton hit two free throws for the Boomers, but Clark hit another long-range trey and Devonte Smith made two free throws for a 70-61 Douglass lead going into the last two minutes.

The Boomers made one last run and closed to 72-66 after a trey by Carrico, but Douglass scored the last 6 points of the game to seal the win.

Douglass finished strong, hitting 8 of 11 field goal tries in the fourth period to hold off the Boomers. The Trojans shot 46 percent for the game while Woodward struggled at times and finished under 40 percent.

Of the Boomers 23 field goals, 14 came from 3-point range.

Smithton was also in double figures for the Boomers with 11 points and Carrico scored 9. Completing the scoring were Casey Covalt and Daniel Nelson with 6 each, Shawn Hunter had 5 and Garrett Roach 3.

Dorrian Williams was in double figures with 14 points for the Trojans, 13 in the first half.

A slow start to the third period put the Boomers in some trouble as Douglass opened with a 12-2 run to take its big lead.

Nelson had four points in the period and Hunter hit a three to help the Boomers climb back in the game.

In a wild first half, the Boomers fell behind 12-3 early, regrouped with an 11-0 run to take the lead and were up by as many as 5 in the second quarter.

Douglass came right back with a 7-0 surge capped by a short jumper from Marquis Buxton-Hill to lead 28-26.

Heckart drilled his fifth 3-pointer of the half to give the Boomers a 31-30 lead, but a score inside by Buxton-Hill and steal and three-point play by Clark put Douglass in front 35-31.

Smithton hit from 3-point range to cut the lead to one, but Williams hit a 30-footer at the buzzer for a 38-34 Trojan advantage.

The Boomers hit 9 times from 3-point range in the half and was 11 of 27 total from the field. Douglass was 15 of 35.

Both teams were active on the offensive glass in a half played at a furious pace.

Woodward ended its most successful season since the 1976 team reached the state semifinals.

The Boomers reached the 23-win mark for only the third time in the past 50 years and they appear poised to stay among the Class 4A elite for a while.

Coach Corey Miller will bring back 7 of his top 8 players for the 2010-2011 season.
