Okarche eliminates Seiling in overtime

Woodward, Okla. — OKLAHOMA CITY - Kristen Meyer scored 8 of her 12 points in overtime as Okarche ended Seiling’s state championship dream at the State Fairgrounds Arena Friday afternoon.

Meyer led Okarche to a 48-40 win over the Wildcats in the Class A semifinals. Okarche will face Chattanooga tonight in the championship game. Seiling ends its season at 24-3.

The game was tied after three periods, and neither team could get an advantage over the final 8 minutes of regulation with the largest lead by either side 2 points.

Seiling took a 33-31 lead on Chelsie Livingston’s rebound and basket at the 5:15 mark, then Megan Schaefer tied it for Okarche with 3:10 left.

With 2:22 remaining, Kari Trammell scored inside to give Seiling its last lead at 35-33.

Schaefer scored the next two buckets to give Okarche a 37-35 advantage with 1:40 left. Sixteen seconds later, Livingston got inside for an offensive rebound and putback to tie the game.

Okarche tried to play for the last shot, but Wildcat senior Chelsea Tate forced a turnover with 7.2 seconds left. Three seconds later Seiling turned the ball back over, but there wasn’t enough time for Okarche to get off a decent attempt and the game went to overtime.

That’s when Meyer, a 5-11 junior who didn’t score at all until the fourth quarter, took over, hitting a short jumper at the 3:35 mark and another a minute later. In between, Trammell hit a free throw, but Okarche had the lead and momentum.

Seiling was unable to answer on its end and had to start fouling.

Meyer hit four free throws over a 12-second span for a 45-38 Okarche lead with 1:40 left in the game

Aubrey Colvard’s free throw cut the lead to six, with 1:28 left and it stayed that way until the final 30 seconds when Okarche hit some more free throws to seal the win.

Seiling had its chances, but the Wildcats missed all 8 of their field goal attempts in overtime and made just 3 of 8 free throws.

Livingston led Seiling with 18 points and Trammell scored 13. Tate had 8 and  Colvard completed the scoring with a free throw.

In addition to Meyer, Schaefer was in double figures for Okarche with 11 points and Macy Kunneman had 10.

The game was close all the way.

Kunneman hit a trio of 3-point baskets in the first period as Okarche grabbed a 13-9 lead.

Seiling came right back, taking advantage of the presence of Trammell and Livingston inside to go ahead 22-18 at halftime.  Livingston and Trammell combined for 10 points in the quarter.

The largest Wildcat lead was six, 24-18 after Trammell scored to start the third quarter.

Seiling still led 29-24 on a Livingston bucket late in the third period, but Okarche tied the game at 29-29 as Brittany Pfaff hit a three-pointer and Brooke Edwards made a pair of free throws.

In an early morning, 9 a.m. start, Class B boys game, the Hammon Warriors saw their season end at the hands of defending state champion Red Oak 47-46.

Red Oak’s Dwight Camp hit a short jumper with 9.4 seconds left for the winning margin and Hammon was unable to answer.

Salyer Roebuck had made 1 of 2 free throws with 24.7 seconds remaining to give Hammon a 46-45 leads.

The Warriors led 45-40 in the fourth period only to see Red Oak tie the game.

Camp led Red Oak with 20 points and Jordan Booth scored 15.

Clay Walker and Colby Walker combined for 21 points for Hammon and Seth Roebuck added 9.

Hammon ends its season 26-8.
