The Boomers put together a strong, often dominant showing in their final preseason scrimmage at Boomer Stadium on Thursday.
Hosting Alva, the Boomers controlled the varsity portion of the scrimmage when both teams had their top units on the field.
Defensively, the Boomers’ first team allowed just 49 yards in 24 plays, giving up next to nothing on the ground. Jesse Huff had a sack in one of the series.
On the offensive end, the Boomers were sharp, scoring 3 touchdowns with their first unit and rolling up 224 yards in 27 plays.
Garrett Roach had a big night running the ball with 53 yards on 4 carries and a touchdown. Casey Covalt completed 9 of 13 passes for 134 yards.
The Boomers didn’t turn the ball over in the 2 series with the starters.
Alva scored twice with its reserves and the Boomers scored once.
In the earlier JV scrimmage, both teams moved the ball pretty well. Alva scored 3 times and the Boomers 2.
The teams also scrimmaged with their 7th and 8th grade teams earlier in the evening.
The Boomers will open the regular season next Friday at El Reno. Woodward’ home opener is Sept. 10 against Garden City, Kan.

In softball action at Guymon on Thursday, the Boomers lost 6-5 in 8 innings in the varsity contest and won the JV match 10-2. Woodward is 14-5 on the season.
