Woodward, Okla. —
University of Oklahoma head baseball coach Sunny Golloway enjoyed spending time with OU fans in Woodward Wednesday.
Golloway was at Boiling Springs State Park Wednesday participating in a golf outing along with former baseball players Damon Minor and Dusty Hansen, OU baseball pitching coach Mike Bell, hitting coach Tim Padlock and coordinator of baseball operations Ryan Gaines. Former OU football player Rufus Alexander also joined the golf outing.
“It was a good experience to be in Woodward,” Golloway said in a speech during a Woodward OU Club rally Wednesday evening. “Everyone I came into contact was really nice.
He said he enjoyed his game of golf, but jokingly added, “wish I could have hit better.”
According to Perry Thomas, the OU Club’s event organizer, 20 people showed up to play golf with Golloway and the other OU personnel.
“It was a good turnout to play golf,” Thomas said.
The players were divided into 7 teams. Four generous fans were selected to play on Golloway’s team. These fans were chosen based on donations they made to the Woodward OU Club.
After playing golf, Coach Golloway went to the Pioneer Room and hosted a “Coaches Roundtable” where he spoke with local coaches.
“I talked to a couple of the coaches from this area, and they have big plans for their team this year,” Golloway said.
He said there is some good talent in this area to help make those "big plans" a reality.
“Northwest Oklahoma has great athletes to recruit,” Golloway said.
In addition, the OU Club of Woodward also hosted a membership drive, hamburger feed, and a silent auction during Wednesday's club rally.
“We had a bigger crowd than anticipated,” Thomas said, noting extra tables and chairs had to be brought in to seat everyone.
According to Thomas, the OU Club has been dormant for a few years, but this week's event with Golloway is the beginning of new things to come.
“We will have another golf outing and meeting like this next year,” he said.
During an interview with The News Golloway said, “I would definitely come back again for something like this.”
Thomas said one reason they are trying to revive the OU Club and get more members is so they can provide more scholarships to be awarded to local students.
According to Thomas, the main function of the OU Club is to provide college scholarships for area students planning to attend the University of Oklahoma.
“This past year the club gave 2 scholarships to Woodward seniors,” he said, noting the scholarships are funded in part by membership dues.
