Taylan Iliff and Kaleb Roach each made 2 free throws in the final 5 seconds as the Boomers rallied past Alva 61-59 in high school basketball action at Boomer Fieldhouse on Tuesday.
Iliff's 2 free throws with 4.6 seconds left tied the game at 59-59. then Roach came up with the ball on the inbounds play, was fouled and converted both attempts with 3 seconds left for the win.
Alva got off a desperation attempt at the buzzer, but Cody Forell's 3-point try was well off the mark.
The Boomers trailed much of the game and were down by seven with 3:30 remaining, 56-49.
But a 3-pointer by Roach, who scored 7 of his 10 points in the fourth period, and bucket by Iliff with 1:30 left cut the Alva lead to 56-54.
Alva still led 58-55 after Riley Hess hit a free throw with 42.2 seconds left, but Roach's offensive rebound and putback with 21 seconds remaining cut the lead to one.
Hess then made 1 of 2 free throws with 20.2 left to make it 59-57.
Alva led by as many as 9 in the first half, but the Boomers tied the game 31-31 at the break. Woodward opened up a 4-point lead early in the third period before Alva came back to go up 50-48 going into the final 8 minutes.
Iliff led the Boomers with 24 points and Ty Richey scored 14.
Hess had 15 and Trevor Johnson 14 for Alva.
The Boomers improved to 2-1 going into Thursday's game against Northeast in the Harrah Panther Classic. Alva is 1-2.
Alva began pulling away late in the second period of the girls game and rolled to a 54-27 victory over the Boomers, who fell to 0-3.
Haylee Bates had 9 points and Kameron Pope 5 for Woodward.
Jordan Hobbs led Alva with 17.
The Boomers play Northeast on Thursday in the Panther Classic.
