WHS boys rout Clinton

You could tell early Clinton was in for a long night.

The Boomers were firing away and connecting from three-point range in the opening moments and they never really slowed down in routing the Red Tornadoes 96-57 in Western Conference basketball action Tuesday at Boomer Fieldhouse.

Woodward celebrated its first top 10 ranking of the year by posting its 16th victory in 19 outings. The Boomers are ranked 9th this week by coachesaid.com.

Clinton fell to 4-14.

It was the same story in reverse on the girls side as Clinton rolled to a 60-20 victory.

Casey Covalt scored 23 points, Drake Smithton 22 and Seth Heckart 18 to lead the Boomer barrage. They weren't the only ones lighting up the scoreboard. The Boomers put 10 players in the scoring column and coach Corey Miller had his starters on the bench well before the fourth period.

Much of the Boomers damage came via the three-pointer as they hit a season high 20 treys.

Heckart scored 15 of his points in the first period as the Boomers sprinted to a 34-10 lead, forcing turnovers with full court pressure and converting virtually every time.

Clinton actually closed to within 12 points midway through the second quarter, but the Boomers pulled away again and led 49-26 at hafltime. It was 77-39 after three periods.

The only drama was would the Boomers get to the 100-point mark for the first time since they scored 118 in a game against Moore Eastern Avenue, a private church school, in December of 1992.

Chaunce Carrico added 10 points as the Boomers put up their highest point total of the season.

The girls game was close after a quarter with the Boomers trailing only 9-6 and missing some chances to get closer.

But Clinton, ranked in the top 15, opened the gap in a big way with an 11-0 run to start the second period and by halftime it was 32-10.

Jennifer Williams had 22 points to pace Clinton.

Woodward's leading scorer was Alex Fischer with 6.

The Boomers are 4-15.

The Boomers remain at home the rest of the week, hosting Elk City on Friday and Cache on Saturday.
