Clinton uses big plays to down Boomers 47-17

Woodward, Okla. — CLINTON - The 6th-ranked Tornadoes had too many weapons for the Boomers to stop on Friday night.

Clinton used a mix of big plays and long drives to hand the Boomers a 47-17 setback in the regular season finale at the Tornado Bowl.

Both teams move on to the Class 4A football playoffs next week, Clinton as the district runner-up and the Boomers as the fourth place qualifier. Woodward advanced despite the loss when Weatherford beat Piedmont 32-20. The Boomers and Piedmont are tied record wise but Woodward won 28-7 when the teams met back in September.

Clinton, 8-2, will host McLoud next Friday while the Boomers travel to face the Ada Cougars.

Other first-round matchups involving 4A-1 teams has unbeaten Anadarko hosting Tecumseh and Weatherford traveling to Douglass.

On Friday, the Boomers stopped Clinton on its first possession, but from there the Tornado offense got cranked up.

After recovering a fumble on the Boomers second possession, the Tornadoes went 45 yards in 3 plays with Marquiz Simpkins getting the last 36.

On their next possession, Clinton went 83 yards in 7 plays for a 13-0 lead. A 45-yard bomb from Garrison Mendoza to Devon Mitchell started things, then the duo hooked up again for the 8-yard touchdown pass with 3.9 seconds let in the opening period.

The Boomers got a couple of first downs before punting, then Clinton went 75 yards in 9 plays with Simpkins going in from 7-yards out. A 29-yard run by Wyatt Eaton set up the score.

Mitchell got an interception on the Boomers. next play, then was on the end of a 65-yard pass from Mendoza that stretched the Clinton lead to 26-0.

The Boomers answered with a 70-yard, 17-play touchdown drive to close out the half.

Woodward converted twice on fourth down as Dakota Taylor picked up 4 yards on  4th and 1, then Ky Merriman got 5 on a 4th and 3 near midfield. Jake Hughes completed passes of 13 and 10 yards to Kaleb Roach and 11 to Kyler Ferguson to set up the score, a 5-yard pass from Hughes to Lane Reazin.

The Boomers carried the momentum into the start of the third period, forcing a Clinton fumble that led to a 30-yard Jesus Munoz field goal, trimming the Tornado lead to 26-10.

But Clinton countered with a 76-yard touchdown drive capped by Eaton's 3-yard run.

Roach's 50-yard kickoff return put the Boomers right back in scoring position and they converted as Hughes hit Logan Pope for a 3-yard score. Taylor got 4 yards on a key 4th and 2 play inside the 10 to set up the score.

But Clinton came right back as Jevon Jefferson broke a 48-yard touchdown run on the next possession to make it 40-17.

The final Clinton score came on a 6-yard run by Eaton in the fourth period.

Woodward ends the regular season at 4-6.
