Throughout next week the Woodward High School football team will be conducting skills camps for kids in the third through eighth grades.
June 22 through June 25 the skills camp for third through sixth graders will occur at Boomer Stadium.
The camp will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
WHS coach Justin Jones said the camp will focus on fundamental skills. Each camper will experience what it is like to play quarterback, running back, wide receiver and the offensive line. Then there will be a break before each camper spends time learning the positions on the defensive side of the ball.
Following this, Jones said campers will work on special teams plays.
At the end of each day, Jones said the kids will be broken up into teams and play ultimate football.
Registration for the camp is on a walk-up basis Jones said. At 12:15 p.m. on June 22 Jones said he should be at Boomer Stadium to meet those who wish to attend the camp.
The cost is $75 per person. About 50 kids showed up for last year’s skills camp. Each camper will be given a free football.
Beginning on June 26 and continuing June 27, the seventh and eighth grade skills camp will be held at Boomer Stadium.
This camp drew about 20 people last year. It runs from 8 a.m. until noon each day.
Jones said that for this skills camp the players will be broken down into positions and some of the terminology and basic football plays that WHS runs will be shown to the kids.
“It gives us a chance to install that stuff at the seventh grade level,” Jones said. “It also gives us a chance to see what we have for the future.”
The seventh and grade skills camp is non-padded and costs $50 to attend.
Jones said that all campers will need for the camp are a pair of cleats if they have them, a T-shirt and shorts.
