Travelers lose in tournament

OMAHA, Neb. – Woodward’s Minors dropped their first game in the College World Series Tournament here Wednesday.

Springfield, Mo. Hillcrest scored four runs in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and defeated the Travelers 7-5.

Shawn Hunter pitched six solid innings for the Travelers, but wasn’t involved in the decision. Braden Hunt came in to pitch the top of the seventh and took the loss. Bradon Todd finished up the game.

Woodward tried to rally in the bottom half and scored twice before the game ended.

Hunt had two hits and two RBI for the Travelers and Matt Burkett drove in a pair of runs.

The tournament continues through Saturday.

Defensive woes cost the Travelers Majors on Wednesday as errors led to nine unearned runs in a 10-6 loss to Enid at Wichita State University.

Woodward fell behind 6-1, rallied to tie the game at 6-6 in the seventh, but Enid scored 4 times in the eight, all unearned, to get the win.

Trevor Long, the third Traveler pitcher, took the loss.

Matt McDonald’s RBI double gave the Travelers a 1-0 lead in the first and it was 1-1 after four innings.

Levi Lewis went the first four innings for Woodward and Kevin Hajny pitched the fifth and sixth frames. Lewis allowed just one run. Hajny gave up five runs, all unearned. Woodward committed four errors in the game, three leading to big innings for Enid.

The Travelers got five runs in the sixth inning with Tyler Overton’s three-run double the big blow.
