Travelers score key win at Enid

ENID – The Travelers posted their most impressive win of the young season with a 6-5 11-inning victory over the Enid Majors Thursday night.

In a game that ended well after 11 p.m. and lasted over three hours, Levi Lewis delivered the clutch hit and Kevin Hajny closed out the win. On Wednesday, the Travelers had dropped a 14-3 verdict to the same squad.

Enid is the four-time defending state champion in American Legion baseball.

Lewis’ two-out double in the top of the 11th inning scored Miguel Salcido who had worked Brock McMullen for a walk. Salcido scored from first base on the hit.

In the bottom half Hajny, who relieved starter Jack Tuck to begin the eighth inning, got Dillon Nave on a pop fly - Nave had tied the game with a homer off Hajny in the ninth inning.

Then, the Thomas native fanned pinch-hitter Tobin Mateychick and leadoff hitter Kelly Padilla to end the game.

Enid scored first, but Woodward led much of the game on the strength of a 4-run second inning.

Salcido and Lewis drove in runs, and Ryne Dunlavy accounted for another with an RBI walk. Trevor Long and Kris Carlisle got the rally going with two-out singles off Enid starter Seth Sturgeon.

Enid scored twice in the bottom of the third on three doubles, but Tuck didn’t allow another run until Zach Gonzalez homered to start the seventh.

The Travelers made it 5-3 in the fifth when Matt McDonald walked and Long singled.

Gonzalez trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the seventh.

Woodward had a chance to get an insurance run in the eighth, but Enid’s defense cut down Dunlavy as he tried to score from first base on Salcido’s double.

Nave’s homer to start the ninth tied the game, but Hajny retired the next three batters.

In the 10th, Hajny pitched around a leadoff single by Nick Rountree and retired the dangerous Gonzalez on a pop up to Lewis.

Woodward didn’t threaten in the 10th and appeared on its way to a quick inning in the 11th as McMullen retired the first two batters on a strikeout and fly ball.

But Salcido worked the pitcher for a walk, then Lewis blasted a shot off the wall in left-center to break the tie.
