Travelers outlast Lawton 18-11

The Woodward Travelers hosted Lawton in a doubleheader on Monday evening. The Travelers won game one 18-11 after exchanging leads with the visitors throughout the game.

In the bottom of the fifth the Travelers were trailing 11-10 when Kevin Hajny hit a double. Ryne Dunlavy hit a single and then stole second. On a passed ball by the Lawton catcher Hajny came in to score and tie the game.

Miguel Salcido, who had homered earlier in the ball game, hit a sacrifice fly that brought Dunlavy home to score. The Travelers would not relinquish the lead again.

The Travelers added six more runs in the sixth inning just to make sure that Lawton did not come back.

Throughout the game the two teams exchanged leads. Traveler starting pitcher Levi Lewis shut Lawton down for the first two innings.

The Woodward bats took off in the bottom of the second when Kris Carlisle hit a two-run home run.

They gave up the lead soon though. After some sloppy play, Lawton got runners on base. After tying the game, Lawton got a three-run home run to go up 5-2.

In the bottom of the third the Travelers came back and scored six runs. Salcido hit his two-run homer in this inning. Ryan Roulet also had a two-run single.

With the score 8-5, it was Lawton’s turn to take the lead. They scored four runs in the fourth. Woodward countered with two of their own to take a 10-9 lead heading into the fifth.

This is when Lawton took their final lead, scoring two runs to go up 11-10.

In the second game, Lawton scored twice in the top of the seventh for a 3-2 win, snapping the Travelers five-game winning streak.

Tyler Overton pitched into the seventh inning but took the loss. Jake Tuck threw in relief.

Offensively, the Travelers got an RBI double from Trevor Long and Ryne Dunlavy hit an RBI sacrifice fly.

The Travelers, 9-6, begin an extended road trip tonight with a doubeheader against Team Oklahoma at the University of Central Oklahoma. Game time is 6 p.m.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Travelers go to Enid for single games.
