Travelers take 50-22 record into tourney

Woodward, Okla. — The Traveler Majors reached a milestone 50th victory on Monday night as they closed out the regular season at Enid.

This is the first time for the Travelers to hit 50 wins since the program really got going full blast again  in Woodward in 2006.

They will take a 50-22 record into today’s Town League State Tournament action.

The Majors begin tournament action tonight at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Southwest Shockers Red-Cleveland County Shockers game, which starts at 1 p.m.

Other first-round games at the new Fuller Park have the Traveler Minors against the Enid Rookies at 10 a.m. and the winner faces the Southwest Shockers at 4 p.m.

Opening round games in Enid have the Enid Minors against OBA White at 1 p.m. with the winner facing the Enid Majors at 7 p.m., and the OBA Red team plays OKC Sandlot at 4 p.m.

Woodward’s Minors take a 46-27 record into the tournament.

Both teams were in action Monday in Enid.

The Majors had an impressive close to the regular season, winning both games by run-rule.

Woodward beat the Enid Minors 11-2 in 5 innings, then the Enid Majors 11-1 in 6 innings, only the Travelers second win over the Majors this season.

In the first game, Chris Faulkner scattered 4 hits over 5 innings and struck out 11 for his third win of the year.

Aaron McCandless homered and drove in 4 runs to pace the offense. Braden Todd had 3 hits, scored twice and drove in 2 runs, and Cole Freeman had 2 RBI.

Todd, Julian, Tanner Ward, Codey McElroy and Freeman all doubled.

Faulkner was the hitting star in the second game, with a grand-slam homer, 2 singles, a sacrifice fly and 7 RBI.

Trevor Julian scored 4 times and had 3 hits and Ryan Ainsworth had a pair of doubles.

Freeman and Julian hit triples and Julian and Todd doubles.

Emory Weatherton had a strong outing, allowing 5 hits and striking out 6 against the potent Enid offense.

The Minors split a doubleheader with the Enid Rookies.

Woodward took the opener 5-3 behind the pitching of Scott Watt.

A 4-run fourth inning proved decisive.

Enid came back to win the second game 7-6.

Bo Kent and Watt scored twice each for the Minors.

Woodward was coming off a 6-1 showing in the Southwest Championships at Grand Prairie, Texas where it won the championship.

On the final day, the Minors routed 3 opponents.

In game one, they beat the Oklahoma Angels - the top seed after pool play - 11-0.

A 7-run fourth inning was the big difference. Connor Ross, Francisco Alvarez and Zach Friesen all scored 2 runs.

Clayton Stoup was the winning pitcher, tossing a one-hitter over 5 innings.

In the semifinals, the Minors downed the Texas Naturals 11-5 with Clayton Brewster and Kent handling the pitching duties.

Tyler Mannering, Ross and Alvarez all scored twice.

Another big inning broke the game open as the Minors scored 8 runs in the fourth frame.

In the championship contest, the Minors put away the Dallas Patriots 10-2.

A 5-run second inning gave the Minors control and they added 5 more runs over the final 2 frames.

Mannering was the winning pitcher.

During pool play in the tournament, the Minors posted a 3-1 record.
