Marvin Brown

Woodward, Okla. — Marvin “Chink” Brown, 94 years old, formerly of Fargo, died Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church of Fargo with Pastor Michael Shepherd officiating.  Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

John Marvin Brown was born April 5, 1918 in Fargo, Oklahoma.  He was the son of Ulysses Frank and Ruby Ruth (McCandless) Brown.  He grew up north of Fargo, attending Greenwood Country School and Fargo High School.  He was united in marriage to Veda Marie Thomas on August 24, 1936.  They were blessed with their daughter, Anita Marie on June 18, 1937.  They went to Washington with Veda’s parents, where both Marvin and Veda worked in the apple orchards.  They returned to Oklahoma and lived on the 16 mile where Marvin worked for the railroad for a brief time.  He then went to work for the Sutter Ranch.  On August 2, 1944, they were blessed with their son, Jerry Marvin.

When the war broke out, Marvin registered for the draft.  He was never called to duty, possibly because he was a cowboy at the Sutter Ranch.  He also worked on construction of the Ft. Supply Dam, later going to work for the Western State Hospital, working in the commissary.  Veda also went to work there, becoming a supervisor of the laundry.  They retired from the hospital in 1981 ans spent their time traveling in their travel trailer with friends until Veda became ill.  Veda passed away October 15, 1989, after they had 50 plus years of marriage.

Marvin joined the Moose Lodge in 1971, when it first began in Woodward.  Both he and Veda were very active members.  During this time, Marvin called Bingo for 13 years while Veda played Bingo.  Marvin earned his Pilgrim Degree, the highest honor a member can earn, in 2003.  Marvin enjoyed fishing, coyote hunting, raising cattle, dancing and playing pitch.  Most of all, he enjoyed his family.  He also enjoyed swimming in the creek on the farm when he was a boy.

Marvin and Mary Louise Brown were married March 6, 1999.  They split their time between Mary’s home in Woodward and the farm north of Fargo.  They did some traveling and were active members of the Moose until Marvin wasn’t able to attend.  He so much enjoyed playing pitch on Saturday nights.

He is survived by wife Mary Brown, daughter Anita Schickedanz and husband, Thaine of Fargo; Jerry Brown and wife Jennie of Pampa, Texas; stepchildren Wendy Gates and husband Randall of Sugarland, Texas, Minka Latta and husband Jeff of Edmond, Lance Brown and wife Mae of Owasso; grandchildren Monica Schickedanz of Amarillo, Texas, Kathy Jones and husband Steve of Woodward, Thana McCleod and husband Jeff of Flower Mound, Texas, Angela Phelan and husband Chris of Collierville, Tennessee, Jarie Brown of Olive Branch, Michigan, Amanda Keel and husband Jason of Memphis, Tennessee, Matthew Brown and wife Chris of Phoenix, Arizona, Jamey Latta, Jacey Latta of Conroe, Texas, Morganne Brown of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Austin Brown an d Kaitlyn James and husband Trey of Vici, Chloe Brown of Paragould, Arkansas, Javier and Aniza Carbonell of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Elizabeth and Yazi Caronell of Owasso; nephews, Dayne Feese and wife Irene of Oklahoma City; great-nephews, James, Justin and great-nieces Summer and Tiffany.  Survivors also are great-grandchildren, Danni Hixson and husband Scotty and boys, of Shattuck, Taos Jones and wife Jackie and family, Geronica Gray and husband Ben and family of Euless, Texas, Gerald Tucker and wife Drayah and family of Amarillo, Texas, Faith and Caleb McLeod of Flower Mound, Texas, Sheridan Phelan, Carter Phelan, Grayson Phelan of Collierville, Tennessee, Aden Clark of Olive Branch, Michigan and Trevor James of Vici; 13 great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
