Woodward, Okla. —
Betty Smith was born in Clinton, Okla on April 15, 1929. She was raised in Clinton and it was there at the USO during WWII that she met a handsome blond sailor, Troy Smith. They were married on Dec 25, 1945. They lived in Okla City where Troy managed a Safeway Store. They had three children, Don, Kathy and Shelly. They later moved to Waynoka where Troy owned his own grocery store – Smitty’s IGA. Then years later owned Smitty’s IGA in Gage.
Troy and Betty were very active in The First Baptist Church. Betty was very active in WMU and in the children’s ministry. When they retired from the grocery business, they because house parents for the Okla Baptist Homes for Children. First in Madill, OK and then in Moore, Ok. When Troy passed away, because of Betty’s special gift with children she was asked to remain as the only single parent houseparent for a cottage of girls.
Betty went to be with her Lord on May 30th. She had fought a good fight and now it was time to enter into her Heavenly Father’s presence to hear, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and husband. She is survived by one brother, Jim Caldwell of Port Isabell, Tx, her children, Don Smith of Gage, Kathy Kocher of Edmond & Shelly Decker of Smithburg, MD, 5 grandchildren & 5 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Edmond, Ok on June 6th at 1:pm.
In lieu of flowers family has requested in Betty’s honor that donations be given to the Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children – 3800 N May – OKC 73112.
