Dr. Jack C. Carmichael

Woodward, Okla. — Dr. Jack C. Carmichael, 79 year old retired Northwestern Oklahoma State University Professor, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at his home in Alva.  A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, February 4, 2013 at the Alva Wesleyan Church in Alva.  A private family burial will take place at a later date.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home, Woodward.

 

Jack C. Carmichael was born on January 22, 1934 in Higgins, Texas to Ray and Hazel (Gragg) Carmichael.  He attended school in Higgins and graduated from Higgins High School in 1952.  He was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War in 1955.  

 

He was united in marriage to Yvonne Cabe on July 4, 1956 in Darmstat, Germany.  They shared an apartment in  Darmstat with a German woman and her three sons.  Jack was a Sharpshooter and was honorably discharge in 1957.

 

Jack attended Panhandle A&M and West Texas State University before transferring to Northwestern Oklahoma State University and receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree.  He did Masters work at Oklahoma State University, where he received his Masters Degree.  Dr. Carmichael did Doctoral work at the University of Washington and the University of Colorado and received his Doctorate from the University of North Dakota.  Dr. Carmichael worked for Northwestern Oklahoma State University as a Professor and was the Department and Division Chair from 1963 until 1992.  After his retirement from Northwestern he worked at the Nicola Valley Institute of Tech in Merritt, British Columbia for five years and Garden City Community College for two years.  He moved back to Woodward before recently returning to Alva.

 

He was a member of the Phi Alpha Theta History National Society and the Elks Lodge.  Jack was animal lover who “took care” of many stray cats.

 

He was a “Jack of all Trades” who enjoyed gardening, watching birds, traveling to Mexico, being on the beach and traveling to the mountains.  His grandchildren gave him the most enjoyment in life and he was known by all as “Bapoo”.  He touched many lives thru education, mentorship and sponorship.

 

He is survived by his wife Yvonne Carmichael of Alva; one son, Casey Ray Carmichael of Freedom; two daughters, Mary Jo Servis and husband Darris of Woodward; Yvette Nusser and husband Charles Dean of Alva; six grandchildren, Jack Cole Servis, Caley Servis, both of Woodward, Charles Bonner Nusser of Oklahoma City, Yvelle Pfleider and husband Clint of Alva, Dakota Nusser of Woodward, Jamie Nusser of Alva; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Dean and Adyson Pfleider; four sisters, Linda Knowles and husband Jerry of Arnett, Carol Gourley and husband Gary of Corinth, Texas, Frankie Summers of Garden City, Kansas, Suzie Hardison of Alvord, Texas; one brother, Denny Carmichael of Higgins, Texas; brother-in-law, Ken Bickelhaupt of Dallas, Texas; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Troy Lee Carmichael, grandson, Heath Bronson Nusser, and brother-in-law, Tom Hardison.

Jan and his wife of 56 years have enjoyed the last 20 years of semi-retirement in Hot Springs Village AR. Many great memories have been created for family and friends in this beautiful golfing community.
