Alvin A. Long

Woodward, Okla. — Alvin A. Long, 79 year old Woodward resident, died Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Woodward Regional Hospital.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 17, 2012 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Jason Dirks and Dr. Allen Mabra officiating.  Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery with the United States Navy providing military graveside rites.

 

Alvin Alonzo Long was born on February 14, 1933 in Ringwood, Oklahoma to Edward Morris and Minnie Edna (Main) Long.  He was reared in Ringwood and attended school there.  He worked as a farm hand before being  inducted into the United States Navy in 1953.  He  served his country overseas during the Korean War and served on several different vessels, the USS Helena, the USS McDermut, and the USS Stembel.  Alvin was honorably discharged on January 23, 1956.

 

Alvin was united in marriage to Myra Ruth Covalt on May 25, 1963 in Buffalo, Oklahoma.  They made their home in Woodward.  He worked as a Glazier in Woodward and Enid.  Alvin owned Great Western Glass from 1973 until 1978 when he sold the company.  He opened Alvin Long Store Fronts and operated this business until moving to Las Vegas in 1986, working as a Glazier.  He and Myra moved back to Woodward in 1991 and they have resided here since that time.

 

Alvin enjoyed fishing, playing cards, telling stories to his friends, and spending time with his family.  He loved his children and grandchildren and spent as much time with them as he could.  He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.

 

He is survived by his wife Myra Long of the home; one son, Marshall Bittner and wife J.B. of Mutual; two daughters, Penny Hopper and husband Mike of New Franklin, Missouri, Jeri Dwinelle and husband Robert of Woodward; daughter-in-law, Rhandie Long of Woodward; six grandchildren, Jessica Bittner, Drew Long, Riley Gaston, Tyson, Trista and Jenny Hopper; six great-grandchildren, Tre, Gabe, Huntir, Bella, Ivy, and Layla; three sisters, Janice Crissup and husband Gary of Helena, Linda Koehn and husband Ronnie of Carrier, JoAnn Bolenbaugh and husband Neil of Enid; sister-in-law, Auda Morrow of Woodward; a special friend who is like a daughter, Trennie Warnock and all of her family; numerous nieces, nephews, and lots of friends that love him.  He will be missed by many.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, Ed Long, mother, Minnie Long, three brothers, Wayne Long, Don Long and Kenneth Long who died in infancy, and one son Andrew J. Long who died on November 30, 1990.

Jan and his wife of 56 years have enjoyed the last 20 years of semi-retirement in Hot Springs Village AR. Many great memories have been created for family and friends in this beautiful golfing community.
