Officials hear design concerns

Woodward, Okla. — Woodward County Commissioners heard some concerns Monday about preliminary design ideas for the renovation of the county fairgrounds.

Gary Nielsen of the Woodward County Fair Board made an appearance at the commissioners' meeting Monday morning to express the Fair Board's opinion on the proposed plans for the Crystal Beach fairgrounds.

Representatives from Architects in Partnership presented some initial design proposals to commissioners during their Oct. 28 meeting.  The first drawings proposed the removal of some of the existing facilities while also adding a new 75,000 square foot multi-purpose arena.

"The Fair Board has concerns about the removal of building 2. We wanted to voice that concern to the commissioners since we think there could be a better use of that space," Nielsen said.

The commissioners expressed the same concern in the prior meeting with the project architects and assured Nielsen that a covered roof drawing with open sides would be appearing on the next drawing of the proposed design.

Nielsen said the Fair Board was also concerned with storage area for Crystal Christmas materials as well as the proposed cuts to the fence running alongside the fairgrounds, which was at least partially built as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA).

"Depending on how much of the fence was constructed by the WPA they won't be able to cut sections out of it for legal reasons," Nielsen said.

The county commissioners said these concerns will also be taken into consideration as the design process for the fairgrounds renovations continues.



OTHER BUSINESS

Also attending Monday's meeting was Woodward E911 Coordinator Shaun Barnett, who wanted to discuss the fate of District 2 Commissioner Ted Craighead's seat on the E911 Board.

With Craighead's retirement approaching, his seat on the E911 board would be left vacant from Jan. 1 to the end of his term on June 30.  Barnett recommended the county board make an appointment to fill the vacancy, at which time the commissioners made the decision to select newly elected District 2 commissioner Randy Johnson to fill the remainder of Craighead's term on the E911 board.

Johnson will take over the District 2 commissioner seat in January.

The board also took action Monday to rescind the acceptance of a bid for breathing apparatuses for the Sharon Fire Department.  Commissioners had approved a bid from Wayest Safety during last week's meeting, but later learned there was an issue with other bids.

District 3 commissioner Vernie Matt said, "One company failed to bid tanks in on low bids so we're rescinding."

The breathing apparatuses will be rebid.

Commissioners also approved a request from Northwestern Electric Coop for 2 utility permits for power lines across District 3 roadways; the allocation of alcoholic beverage tax for November, and monthly reports from county officers.
