Woodward, Okla. —
According to local sheriffs a suspect in a number of recent break-ins throughout several area counties is now in law enforcement custody.
"The suspect is currently being held in Harper County on (burglary) charges after he allegedly broke into a home while the homeowner was there," Woodward County Sheriff Gary Stanley said.
Stanley along with Harper County Sheriff Marty Drew confirmed the arrest of Jacob Givens, 26, at his home in Woodward on Wednesday afternoon.
Givens was arrested by Woodward Police on the Harper County warrant and then handed over to Harper county deputies.
"He is being charged with one count of 1st degree burglary here in Harper County," Drew said, noting that Givens is accused of breaking into a home in Buffalo on Aug. 18.
A female resident who was home at the time, confronted the burglar in her kitchen, and when the woman asked him what he was doing, the man said he was in the wrong place and left, Drew said.
After the woman reported the incident to the Harper County Sheriff's Office, she was presented with a photo line-up and picked out Givens' photo as the suspect.
With their suspect identified, Harper County officers requested assistance from the Woodward Police Department to arrest Givens.
Drew noted that Givens may soon be facing additional charges, including "possibly 3 more counts" in Harper County alone, in connection with other cases involving theft of prescription drugs.
Due to similar medication thefts in Woodward County, Stanley said "We sent an officer to interview Givens once Harper County had him in custody."
"During the interview he confessed to break-ins in Woodward, Ellis, Woods and Harper counties," Drew said.
That includes allegedly confessing to a burglary at a home along Highway 270 south of Fort Supply on Aug. 11, for which Givens has been charged with one felony count of second degree burglary and one misdemeanor count of malicious injury to property in Woodward County District Court.
According to the affidavit filed with the Woodward County charges, Givens is accused of allegedly kicking in the door of the rural Fort Supply home, doing damage to the door and it's frame, before allegedly rummaging through medication bottles in the home's kitchen and taking a single bottle of pain medication.
The affidavit states that the Woodward County deputy questioned Givens about 14 other similar break-ins around the county. No charges have been filed against Givens in connection with any of those other burglaries.
However, Stanley said he would anticipate additional filings locally.
Givens allegedly told investigators that "he was just driving around and kicking in doors," and that "he was orally taking the medication as fast as he was stealing it," according to the court affidavit.
While it has taken cooperation between a number of law enforcement agencies to arrest Givens, Drew said he would attribute much of the credit to Harper County Deputy Thomas McClendon.
He said he was "very proud" of McClendon for the hard work the deputy put into this case.
"He worked days off to gather the evidence needed to catch this person," Drew said, noting McClendon has "done an excellent job."
Stanley said he is just glad that their burglary suspect has been arrested, hopefully bringing a stop to the recent string of thefts throughout the area.
"I'm really glad that he (Givens) is in jail now and not running around anymore, and I'm sure the people of Woodward County are happy as well," Stanley said.
