Woodward, Okla. —
The Friends of Historic Fort Supply will be holding a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m. at the Woodward Conference Center.
Organizers said the meeting will be open to the public.
Treasurer Rob Roberson said this meeting is a way for the group to report on what they have been working on over the past year and a way to get new members.
"We are strictly a volunteer group that want to keep this historic site open," Roberson said.
The organization operates via fundraisers and donations and is working to get more funds to help with the rebuilding of several buildings at Historic Fort Supply.
According to Historic Fort Supply site manager Bob Rea there are 4 structures at the site, 2 of which are currently being worked on.
"The friends group is working to raise money to put a new roof on the commanding officer's quarters," Rea said.
"Mead Ferguson, our president, was the one person that really got our organization going. He got us all together and we just grew from there," Roberson said.
During the meeting on Sept. 6, the Friends of Historic Fort Supply will be introducing themselves to the community hoping to increase their membership.
"The more people you have the stronger it is and we want to build a strong viable organization," Rea said.
"We will also be voting for new board members and will be giving our financial report, which we are in the black on," Roberson said.
Rea will also be giving his annual report on the facility.
Rea said due to cuts in federal and state funding, Historic Fort Supply relies heavily on the "Friends" group for repairs and for a part-time worker at the site.
Roberson said they will be discussing the future plans for the organization and possible fundraisers such as dutch oven cooking classes.
"We have done the dutch oven classes in the past and they always seem to fill up fast," Roberson said.
