Woodward, Okla. —
The Woodward Fire Department is organizing a benefit golf scramble Sunday to help raise money for Steve Smith's battle with cancer.
"Steve is A Shift's lieutenant," said Shane Pingry, firefighter and coordinator of the golf scramble, "He's been battling cancer off and on for at least 5 years now.
"Between the treatments and the trips to get treated its been a pretty expensive ordeal, so this is a way for us to try to help out."
The golf scramble will feature 4-player teams and will be held at the Woodward Municipal Golf Course at Crystal Beach. A lunch catered by Dan's Steakhouse starts at 11 a.m. and tee off is at noon.
"We also plan to hold a silent auction during the event," said Pingry. "We'll have items donated by local businesses laid out and people will be able to walk around and make bids on them. We've got items from pullovers to flashlights and a bunch of other stuff.
"The whole event has been a group effort from everyone at the firehouse. We just want to help Steve out any way we can."
Those interested in participating in the tournament can either contact Pingry at the fire station at 254-8540 or sign up at the event on Sunday by 11 am. Businesses interested in sponsoring holes should contact Pingry by 5 p.m. on Saturday.
