Woodward, Okla. —
The Woodward High School Student Council is collecting tabs from soda cans as part of a competition for their upcoming district meeting in Canton.
Whichever high school collects the most tabs will win an undisclosed prize.
"In addition to helping Woodward High School's student council win a prize, the tabs will also be donated to the Ronald McDonald House to raise funds to help keep families of hospitalized children together by providing them with a place to stay while the child undergoes treatment," said Shelley Cook, student council sponsor.
To learn more about Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and ways to support it, such as through pop tab collections, visit the organization's website at http://rmhc.org.
According to the website, the pop tabs are weighed to determine how much money the Ronald McDonald House will receive.
"After the tabs are collected, the local RMHC Chapter brings the collection to local recycling centers, where they are weighed to determine their value (values can vary significantly). The recycling center then sends the local RMHC Chapter a check for the total value," the website states.
There are 2 Ronald McDonald Houses in Oklahoma, one is located in Oklahoma City and the other is located in Tulsa.
Cook urges the community to help out in the student council's pop tab collection as a way to both support the students and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
"The best way to help out would be to bring your pop tabs to the High School in a bag and drop them off at the front office," she said. "If that wouldn't work we could also have a member of student council come and pick up the tabs."
Donations will be accepted up until Oct. 8, which is the day before the district meeting. For any inquiries regarding how to help the student council out with their pop tab drive, people can contact Shelley Cook at 334-3338.
