Woodward, Okla. —
Construction for a new storage room recently began at the Plains Indians and Pioneer Museum.
"We've been waiting for this for quite a while," Museum Director Rob Roberson said. "Construction of the store room was planned to start much sooner than this, but it was delayed by the tornado in April."
With so much construction effort going into repairs after the tornado, it took time before a crew could get around to building the storage facility at the museum, Roberson said. The new 40-foot by 40-foot storage room will be built by Bouse Construction, he said.
Even before the construction delay, the museum was more than ready to have a little more storage space for its artifact collection.
"Our current store room is overflowing with artifacts donated by people," Roberson said.
The new storage room will provide an additional 1,600 square feet to help house everything from textiles and clothing to typewriters and other machinery, he said.
However, the museum director said the construction is not expected to disrupt the museum's regular operations.
"Since the construction is all taking place outside and its in an area where the public really doesn't go anyways, it really won't affect anything," Roberson said.
The storage structure is being built northward from the northwest corner of the museum and will serve as an overflow area for the existing storage space.
This addition to the museum was made possible by the Buttel Trust which was left by Francis and Della Buttel to benefit nonprofit organizations across Northwest Oklahoma.
