Woodward, Okla. —
Area 4-H members will have the opportunity to practice their public speaking skills during an upcoming Woodward County 4-H speech contest.
The speech competition will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. at the Woodward County Fairgrounds.
4-H members can give speeches on a number of topics according to OSU Extension Agent Melanie Matt.
"Kids can give speeches on home economics, agriculture or general areas that are tied to 4-H, like a citizenship project or community service," Matt said.
Contestants will compete in 3 age groups, junior for ages from 9 to 11; intermediate for ages 12 to 14; and senior for ages 15 to 18.
Learning to speak in front of a group at an early age plays a big part in why 4-H holds this contest, Matt said.
"Kids learn the proper way to put a speech together with and intro, body and conclusion," she said.
The students have access to plenty of help throughout the speech-writing process, she said.
"If they need help with their speeches they have the support of their local 4-H advisors plus help here at the OSU Extension office," Matt said.
During the competition, the 4-H speech contestants will be graded on several levels, Matt said.
"They are graded on how well they have the speech memorized, their delivery and tone, their emotions, posture, eye contact and poise," she said. "They are also judged on how well they understand the topic they have chosen to talk about, the originality of their speech and how well they present the speech to the audience for them to understand."
