Pumpkins on Parade coming up in Shattuck

Woodward, Okla. — SHATTUCK - The Red Barn will open its doors for the 3rd Annual Pumpkins on Parade event on Oct. 27. The fun is sponsored by Main Street Shattuck.

Pumpkins on Parade is a fall festival centered around pumpkin competitions, with the highlight being a giant pumpkin contest.

Last year's winner came from Iowa and weighed 1,133 pounds, said Main Street's Tena Nix. That was a big leap from the first contest in 2010, for which the champion was 141 pounds. The world record is 1,825 pounds.

Pumpkin weigh-in begins at 10 a.m., and then judging at 11 a.m. The winning pumpkin grower will get $1,000 from the international Great Pumpkin Commonwealth organization. Runners-up will also get cash prizes, Nix said. There's no charge to enter.

In addition to the biggest pumpkin, Nix said, "There are several pumpkin categories to enter, like squashes and gourds."

For this year's event, festival organizers are expecting entries from South Dakota, Iowa and he immediate area, including Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas, Nix said.

"I've talked to a couple of people from around here who said they might enter a pumpkin," she said.

If you're not a pumpkin grower, there will still be lots to do for enjoyment.  Other activities include a costume contest, seed-spitting contest, pumpkin pie eating competition, pumpkin carving, pumpkin painting and judging of pumpkin recipes, said Nix.

"There's also a free contest to count the number of pieces of candy corn in a jar," she added.

There will be a small fee to enter the pie-eating and recipe events.

"If people bring a carved pumpkin, there's no fee to enter," she said. "But there is if they carve the pumpkin on-site, to help pay the judges."

Additionally, several vendor booths will be set up to sell handmade crafts, home-baked goods and national products.

Nix said there will also be exhibits from Mary Kay, Pampered Chef and Conklin.

"There's still time to reserve a 10 by 10 booth," Nix said. "Let me know by Oct. 26."

Contact Nix at (580) 216-4568 to reserve a booth, learn about any applicable contest fees, and for more information about the festival in general.
