When Eric Millison was in eighth grade, he attended a career day at High Plains Technology Center and learned he wanted to become a welder.
His desire to weld stayed with him, and, after he graduated from high school, he enrolled in welding classes at High Plains. He furthered his training when he attended Tiger Welding in Tulsa.
On Friday, approximately 350 eighth grade students will visit the technology center for a career day held especially for them just like Millison did several years ago, said attendance officer Dot Stump, who is also Millison's mother.
“We try to introduce (students) in the fourth grade to lay the seed,” Stump said. “By eighth grade they’ll remember this. It’s something they can look forward to ...”
Students from Woodward, Buffalo, Fargo, Fort Supply and Sharon-Mutual will all be there, she said.
They’ll be able to spend time with representatives from local banks, radio stations, veterinarians, farming and ranching enterprises, the U.S. Marines and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Stump said. All together 19 presenters, including some from the technology center, will be on hand to talk with the students about their career options.
The career day will begin at 8:35 a.m. and will last until students conclude their visits with the various representatives, Stump said.
High Plains conducts a number of career days throughout the year and recently hosted high school seniors from Woodward and the surrounding area.
