Mooreland hosting academic bowl tournament

Mooreland High School will host a OSSAA Regional Academic Bowl Tournament for Class 2-A today. The tournament begins at 1 p.m. in the elementary school.

Over 88 students in 9th through 12th grades will answer questions on subjects like math, geography, sports, spelling, science, English, history, government and popular culture, said Ron Wilson, principal at Mooreland High School.

Eleven schools are participating from Oklahoma, they are: Hooker, Turpin, Beaver, Texhoma, Mooreland, Seiling, Laverne, Thomas-Fay-Custer, Canton, Geary and Hydro-Eakly.

It is an Oklahoma of Secondary School Activities sponsored event. According to their website “The purpose of the OSSAA Academic Bowl is to enhance the learning and intellectual pursuit of Oklahoma students. The competition will assist learners in appreciating the opportunities of advancing their knowledge.”

Wilson said each team usually consists four players, and the students are awarded for correct answers to questions asked by the moderator.

Students must answer the questions without the use of devices such as calculators or computers. Wilson said competitors are allowed to use a pencil and paper for math questions.

Mooreland has hosted the tournament many times. This year they will be represented by two teams.

Wilson said, “It’s really fun but it can also get pretty competitive toward the end, especially when you’ve got a match within ten or twenty points- it gets pretty intense.”

The top four teams will advance to the OSSAA Area Tournament. Two teams will then advance to the state tournament from each area tournament.
