Luncheon gives students a taste of college

Seniors at Woodward High School got a taste of college on Monday.

The students met with representatives from six Oklahoma colleges during a luncheon held in the school library.

Over 80 students took advantage of the opportunity to meet with college representatives in small groups to discuss topics like academic programs, campus life, financial aid programs and admission procedures.

“This gives the kids a chance to talk with college representatives in an intimate, family-type setting,” said high school counselor Mary Brenner. “I hope that being able to ask questions here at Woodward High School will help make them feel more comfortable about attending the college days coming up.”

Colleges that participated were Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Northern Oklahoma College, University of Oklahoma, University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. Representatives from each college gave students information and advice on scholarships, sports, housing, jobs and more.

Jodi Ackerman, NOC admissions counselor, said she wanted to let students know about the programs at NOC including nursing, business and education. The athletic training program at NOC has also become very popular, Ackerman said, noting that many students then go on to attend physical therapy school.

“We are a junior college and a good transition school for students who aren’t ready to make a big jump to a university,” said Ackerman. “NOC offers remedial courses and other classes that are easily transferable to OSU.”

The table for those interested in attending UCO in Edmond had the largest number of students. Emily Herr, UCO admissions counselor, discussed everything from food in the cafeteria to campus life.

Senior Hallie Poulson said Herr answered questions she had about student housing. Poulson said she learned that “We aren’t required to live on campus, but it will be a good way to meet new people and take advantage of the meal plan.”

This is the first time for the luncheon, and Brenner said she hopes to have one again next year. Lunch was donated by Blue Water Grill and dessert was donated from The Cake Lady. College representatives provided the students with information, inspiration and connections to support their interests career goals. Around this time, students are narrowing down their choices to one or two places.

“Today, after talking with the representatives one-on-one, I hope that our students can make an individual decision and not just go where their friends are going,” Brenner said.
