Laverne thinking big in 2013

Woodward, Okla. — LAVERNE -  Big plans are in the works for 2013 in Laverne, according to Chamber and Main Street Executive Director Terri Wheeler.

One of the biggest highlights of the year will be Laverne's centennial celebration, which will be observed in March.

"On March 16, there will be a dedication of a monument comprised of bricks that the public has purchased, at City Hall," Wheeler said.

Prior to the dedication ceremony, a community chuck wagon meal will be served, she said.

In addition to honoring Laverne's past, there are also plans for making improvements to benefit the town now and into the future.

That includes 2013 seeing the start of a water system improvement project for the community.

"Measurements are still being made, but the project will definitely start this year," Wheeler said. "There will be better water pressure and improved meters."

The next year also looks to see continued business development in Laverne, Wheeler said.

A liquor store and a beauty spa recently held their grand openings on Main Street, she said.  

While applications for residency and employment at the new Parkview Point Assisted Living Center, on Main Street, will start in early February. Wheeler said Jan Love has the details at (580) 921-7275.

And a building that will house a computer store and a batting cage on Main Street is currently being renovated, and both venues are expected to be open by mid-year, she said.

Asked if it looks like Laverne is growing, Wheeler says, "Absolutely. A lot of our young people are returning, and that's exciting."
