While people enjoy area lakes and parks during Labor Day weekend, the main concern for authorities is public safety. Visitors should take precautions to stay safe and enjoy the last big holiday of the summer.
Woodward County Sheriff’s deputies and the Woodward Police Department are continuing the “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest” crackdown through the weekend.
It is also illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“Drinking while driving a boat is treated just like drinking and driving a car,” said Canton Lake Park Ranger Debbie Chaloupek.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard’s website, alcohol is even more hazardous on the water than on land. It said the marine environment - motion, vibration, engine noise, sun, wind and spray - accelerates a drinker’s impairment.
Fort Supply and Canton lakes are both fully booked with reservations for the weekend. The only available camp sites are in first come first serve areas.
While boating at either lake, all children 12 and under are required to wear a life jacket and people of all ages are encouraged to wear one.
“People know the mechanics of swimming but don’t realize it’s different in the lake. It takes a lot of physical endurance and the distance can be deceiving,” said Fort Supply Lake Lead Ranger Don Underwood.
“Many times alcohol or injuries can make a person unconscious and they can drown,” he added.
