Museum to feature local photographer

Rowynn Ricks has been fascinated with photography almost ever since she was old enough to hold a camera. This fascination has developed from just taking vacation and holiday snapshots into winning awards for her news photography.

The local photographer will showcase about 70 of her photographs at the Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum. The exhibit titled, “Everyday Things,” will open with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 30.

The show will remain on display through March 6. Select images from the exhibit will also be available for purchase.

Ricks said she wants people to take away from her exhibit an appreciation for the simple things that make life special.

“I want them to take away an appreciation for details because I think many of my photos capture the meaningful details of life that we sometimes overlook,” she said.

In her three years as a reporter for the Woodward News, she has received six photography awards as well as seven writing awards, through the Associated Press/ Oklahoma News Executives 2007 and 2008 contests. In that same time she has also had several photographs and articles printed in newspapers across the state including the Enid News and Eagle and The Oklahoman.

Ricks has also had a few of her photographs printed in other publications including “New Plains Review” which is the literary journal at her alma mater, the University of Central Oklahoma.

She graduated from UCO in May 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in English and minors in journalism and mathematics.

One of the things she enjoys most about photography is the medium’s ability to show the world in a different light, whether it’s magnifying the tiny world of a ladybug for all to see or revealing the hidden beauty of something as everyday as a rusted metal lawn chair.
