Library looks to instill love of reading at young age

Woodward, Okla. — You’re never too young to love reading.

That’s why the Woodward Public Library is reaching out to its youngest patrons as part of its children's reading programs that start on Oct. 1.

These programs offer learning through fun and games for children birth through 5-years-old, according to Martha Feerer, children's librarian.

There are 3 programs, each designed for different age groups as they work on different learning skills with both mom and child, Feerer said.  The library offers both morning and afternoon sessions for each age group, she said.

"During the Lap Sit, which is for children birth to 18 months, we do musical activities, work on large motor skills and mom will read to the child," she said.

Lap sit is offered Mondays at 10 a.m. or Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

Toddler Time is for 19 months to 3 years and during their time they do an easy craft that mom will help them with, story time and work on fine motor skills, Feerer said.

Toddler Time is offered Mondays at 1 p.m. or Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

"Story Time is for children 3 and up and is where we get more in-depth on developmental skills," Feerer said.

"We play games where they need to use their memory and really work on their cognitive learning skills."

Story time is offered Tuesdays at 1 p.m. or Thursdays at 10 a.m.

"Lap Sit and Toddler Time are both 30 minutes long with Story Time being 45 minutes," Feerer said.

These programs will run from October through April, with the exception of December, when no programs are held since everyone is usually busy with the holidays.

Those interested in any of these free children programs are asked to contact the library in advance to enroll at 254-8544.

"We want people to enroll so we have an idea of how many will be attending so that we have enough snacks and craft projects for all that will be there," Feerer said.

However, she added, "We won't turn anyone down, even if they show up the day of."
