Woodward, Okla. —
FAIRVIEW - Oklahomans have a bit of a contentious relationship with the invasive red cedar tree. But the Aromatic Cedar Association (ACA) is looking to change that.
The ACA urges landowners to hold off before putting a match to the trees, as there are valuable products that may be derived from red cedar.
These products include the wood itself, cedar oil and energy formulations.
"And each of these products can be produced from a single red cedar tree," said OSU Cooperative Extension Forestry Specialist Craig McKinley.
LEARN ABOUT MAKING MONEY FROM RED CEDAR
For those who may be interested in turning a profit from their cedar trees, the ACA will be sharing money-making opportunities with the public during its upcoming annual convention on Oct. 27 in Fairview.
The conference, which will start at 8:30 a.m. and last until about 2 p.m., will be held at the Fairview Civic Center, 206 E. Broadway.
McKinley said the conference will feature 6 presentations that are designed to educate the public, and producers, on the best way to add value to an underutilized species.
The meeting will emphasize the industrial opportunities red cedar provides as well as the possible economic benefits, he said.
"Also, legislative matters and bidding of red cedar items for government projects are on the agenda," said McKinley.
Attendees will also get a review of the state's Eastern Red Cedar Registry Board, which was created by the legislature, he said. The board was formed to connect red cedar owners and business operators, he said.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
A pamphlet about the meeting, with details on prices, is available at area County Extension offices, McKinley said.
"We need to have the registrations back into the Extension office by Oct. 15," he said. "That's so we know how much to cook for the barbecue lunch."
McKinley said the ACA has held at least 15 various red cedar demonstration conferences, with an attendance of around 40 to 50 people at each.
