Heritage contest celebrates Oklahomans

Woodward, Okla. — Celebrating Oklahoma's history through its people is the focus of upcoming Heritage Week competitions sponsored by the Oklahoma Heritage Association and Gaylord-Pickens Museum.

This year Oklahoma Heritage Week will be celebrated Nov. 12 to Nov. 16.  As part of those celebrations, students from across the state are asked to help tell the stories of individuals who have played important roles in Oklahoma history.

According to Shelley Rowan, marketing director for the Oklahoma Heritage Association, students will share those stories through art, essays and video.

The contest is open to all Oklahoma students in 4th through 12th grades, but will be broken up into 3 different grade divisions:

• 4th through 6th graders will compete in a poster contest where they have to depict an Oklahoman through art;

• 7th through 9th graders will compete in an essay contest where they relate the importance of an individual from their county to their county's history; and

• 10th through 12th graders will compete in a video contest in which they select a native Oklahoman and depict that person's impact on the state through an original video documentary.

Contest entries need to be sent to the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum 1400 Classen Dr. Oklahoma City, 73106  by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26.

The winners will be announced in early November prior to Statehood day and a winners reception with Governor Fallin will be held at a date to be determined in early December, Rowan said.

Cash prizes will be awarded to one winning student from each of 7 regions across the state and the top 3 statewide winners in each age group will also earn additional cash awards, according to Rowan.

"This contest was started over 30 years ago as a way for Oklahoma students to learn about a specific story of a person in our state and a new way for kids to connect with their Oklahoma heritage," Rowan said.

The contest originally started with the poster competition, she said.

"It has grown over the years and the video portion for the 10th through 12th graders is the newest part," she said.
