Woodward, Okla. —
Older readers won’t be left out of the fun at the Woodward Public Library this summer as the library is continuing its adult summer reading program.
The adult reading program was launched at the library last summer and turned out to be quite a success, according to Library Director Connie Terry.
“We had such a wonderful response last year,” Terry said. “We planned for only 15 or so but we ended up being twice that or more.”
She said there are already 6 adults signed up for this year’s program even though registration only opened up Monday.
The program will be similar to last year’s, Terry said, noting that “like last year, they’ll read a book and then write a review.”
Participants will turn in their reviews to be included in drawings for prizes. This year the prizes are book bags decorated with a quote by Cicero “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need,” which are filled with gardening items.
The prizes go along with the program’s theme, “Water Your Mind: Read!”
Also tying into the theme will be a weekly drawing in a “mystery plant” contest, where the library will display a mystery plant, ask patrons 18 and older to guess what type of plant it is and a winner will be drawn from the correct answers to receive a prize.
In addition a “Garden Party” themed luncheon will be held on June 16 and will feature Oklahoma author Sheldon Russell, who will present a program on his book “The Yard Dog.” Pre-registration is required to attend the “Garden Party.”
Those interested in signing up for the adult reading program, which kicks off this week and will continue for 5 weeks, are encouraged to speak with Assistant Library Director Cindy Colclasure or any other librarian.
In addition to the reading program, a number of other events have been scheduled for the library’s adult patrons.
The first is a special “Living Biography” presentation by Robert R. Cordell, a professor of social science at West Virginia University at Parkersburg.
Terry said Cordell is originally from the Shattuck area and is returning to Northwest Oklahoma later this month to attend the Shattuck reunion. During his visit, the professor will stop by the library on Friday, May 28 at noon to present a program that explores the lives of Helen Keller and her famous teacher Anne Sullivan.
A lunch will be provided during the program, which should last around 45 minutes. Seating is limited, so those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP by this Friday.
Later in the summer, guest crafter Yulonda Merry will facilitate scrapbook workshops in which participants will get to create and take home mini-photo albums with a beach theme. There is a small fee for the workshops, which are set for June 9 and June 16, and pre-registration is also required.
