Woodward, Okla. —
Woodward Main Street is looking to be busy over the next couple of months according to Main Street Program Director Janet Fitz.
First downtown merchants will be getting into spirit of the new season with some redecorating.
"At the end of this week I've challenged all of the downtown merchants to decorate their 'squares' with fall decor and they will be judged next week by some out of town visitors," Fitz said.
Then on Oct. 13, Main Street will host a street dance as part of Woodward's homecoming festivities. The dance will start at 7:30 p.m.
"We will have a couple of blocks closed off and K101 will be there playing oldies for all of the Woodward alumni that want to come," Fitz said.
There will also be prizes and concessions during the dance, she said.
National Main Street Week will also be celebrated this coming month, during the week of Oct. 22 to Oct. 26. Fitz said that she and her merchants are still considering how they will be celebrating the week.
However, plans for Halloween have already been made, with downtown trick-or-treating starting at 5 p.m. on Oct. 31.
"Last year we had a little over 1,000 kids, in their costumes, come through and we are expecting 1,200 to 1,500 this year," Fitz said.
There will be ghostly treats, along with free hot dogs, chips and water all sponsored by Main Street, according to Fitz.
"The Shriners, AMBUCS, police, fire and EMS will all be on hand as well," she said.
But perhaps the most anticipated event that is planned for Main Street this fall is the start of the Streetscape project.
"We are working toward breaking ground on the Streetscape project on Nov. 19," Fitz said.
Bids for the Streetscape project will be presented to the city commission for approval during its meeting Monday night.
The Streetscape project includes putting in new sidewalks, new crosswalks, handicapped parking along with handicap ramps on the sidewalks, new planters on corners, new curbs and it will also bury all of the power lines that run through downtown, Fitz said.
"We are also getting rid of the stop lights at 10th and 8th streets," she said.
