1 killed, 1 injured in semi-SUV crash

Woodward, Okla. — A Taloga woman was killed in a 2-vehicle accident near the intersection of Highway 270 and Highway 34 south of Woodward Friday morning.

Pearl P. Borden, 86, was pronounced dead at the scene from neck and internal trunk injuries, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol accident report.

Borden was driving a 2004 Cadillac SUV northwest bound along Highway 270 around 10:15 a.m. Friday, OHP said.

She then entered the middle turning lane to turn south onto Highway 34, approximately 4 miles south of Woodward, OHP said.

Borden failed to yield and pulled out in front of a 2005 Volvo semi that was traveling southeast bound along Highway 270, OHP said.

The semi struck Borden’s SUV and both vehicles went off the roadway to the right, the accident report states.

The semi then overturned 1/4th time, coming to rest on the driver’s side, OHP said, while the SUV continued onto a private parking area.  Borden’s vehicle then struck a parked 1982 Autocar truck before coming to a stop, OHP said.

According to the accident report, both Borden and the driver of the semi, Jesus E. Meabon, 32, of Forrest City, Ark., were pinned in their respective vehicles for several minutes before being freed by emergency personnel.  

Borden was pinned for 18 minutes and Meabon was pinned for 12 minutes, OHP said, noting neither was wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Meabon was transported to Woodward Regional Hospital where he was treated and released, OHP said.

The accident was investigated by Trooper James Crowder, of the Shattuck Detachment.  He was assisted by Lt. David Welch and Trooper Pat Fike.

Jason Powell works for Magnet Trucking which has an office and parking lot located at the southwest corner of the Highway 270 and Highway 34 junction.  

It was one of Magnet Trucking’s vehicles that Borden’s SUV crashed into after being struck by the semi.

Powell told The News he was thankful that he wasn’t another victim in the accident.

“If it had been 15 minutes later I would’ve been under the truck where the car is at,” he said at the scene of the accident around 10:30 a.m. Friday.

As it was Powell was working on a truck just feet away from the parked “tandem” truck that Borden crashed into.

“I was greasing the truck and had my back turned (away from the highway),” he said.  “But then I heard it, heard the truck turned over, and I turned around.  And here she came, driving pretty fast.”

Powell was referring to Borden in her SUV, which he witnessed “hit the bar ditch and then came flying up over and wedges underneath our tandem.”

Powell said Friday’s accident is not the first he’s seen at that intersection.

“They happen out here often,” he said, noting “we’ve got a bad 4-way right here.”
