On Saturday, March 27, Christian music fans will be able to hear million album-selling band Barlow Girl perform at the Woodward High School Auditorium with guests Stellar Kart and VOTA.
The concert will be a benefit to raise money for The Pregnancy Center in Woodward.
According to Rebecca Barlow, the oldest of three sisters who make up the Chicago-based Barlow Girl band, benefit concerts are something the band does frequently.
“We’ve been doing a lot of fundraisers, so we’re excited about Woodward,” Barlow said, noting “we’ve worked with pregnancy centers in Chicago, and it sounds like it’s exactly the type of fundraiser we’ve been associated with so far.”
“We love supporting other people’s missions that are trying to help other people in any way,” she said.
At the March 27 concert, fans can expect to hear the band’s favorite songs from its last four albums, Barlow said, noting fan favorite “Never Alone” will be among them.
“We also do acoustic songs, and at the end of the night, we encourage people to offer prayer for the economy and for people that are with a need,” Barlow said. “We try to end in worship and prayer. That’s the goal.”
In the six years since Barlow Girl released its first album, the band has established itself, selling over a million albums and has been featured on NBC’s Today Show. The band has also claimed the longest running No. 1 single in Christian Radio Weekly’s chart history at 13 weeks with the hit, “I Need You to Love Me.”
According to Barlow, 30, she and her two sisters Alyssa, 28, and Lauren, 24, write every song together, each bringing a different piece to the composition.
“Lauren writes the catchy phrases,” Barlow said, noting “I’ll play a chord, and she’s like that’s cool. I do the chords (on guitar), Lauren plays the drums, and Alyssa plays both piano and bass guitar. We all sing.”
She noted inspiration for the band's mostly rock music comes from Christian teachings and from personal struggles.
One of the things the band is known for promoting is purity and modesty.
The reason, Barlow said, is because the sisters had a desire for those virtues before the band was formed 11 years ago.
“Through reading of books and studying about dating and purity, (we knew it) was the thing to do and devote(d) our lives to the Lord," she said. “Purity of heart is a good thing.”
Musically the Barlow girls have been involved in ministry since an early age, Barlow said, noting they got their musical start at Willow Creek Church just outside of Chicago.
“Alyssa started performing when she was 4,” Barlow said, noting “my dad convinced me to start playing at the church when I was 16 or 17. Lauren was about 11.”
Although the sisters have been a band for 11 years, Barlow Girl has only been signed for the past seven years, growing from a hobby to a profession.
While performing at the benefit concert, Barlow Girl will promote it’s newest “Love and War” album as part of its “Love and War” tour.
“We’ve been doing this tour now for a month and a half, and we’ve really been seeing God show up every night,” Barlow said, noting they use their music to encourage others to reach out to God for the same healing and fulfillment they have found in a relationship with him.
