Auction nets $78K for 4-H, FFA students

Woodward, Okla. — Thursday  was a day for winners, especially for those who participated in the 2010 Woodward District Livestock Show.

The week-long show culminated with the auctioning of almost 100 top animals, which earned a total of $78,100 (not including add ons).

According to C.J. Montgomery, emcee of the event, the show brought a record crowd with over 1,000 youths participating from all the way into the Panhandle and over 900 livestock.

One 4-H student Keridan Ward, of Woodward, received $2,500 for her Angus named Liberty, which won supreme heifer.

“It feels awesome,” Ward said when asked how she felt about her prize. “It’s only my second year to show. Most kids go their whole lives without ever being supreme.”

She said her prize heifer would lead to more dollars for her.

“It’s more money in the bank because the more you win, the higher places you get and the more money you get,” she said.

However, Ward said, “it’s not about the money. It’s about keeping your animal in good condition and having fun every day. I would never give this up.”

Ward said she planned to keep Liberty for breeding and “raise her babies and show them,” which is what she did with the heifer.

Kierstyn Mesa, a 4-H student from Beaver, received $600 for her reserve grand champion Hampshire barrow.

“We did really good this year,” Mesa said, noting she “put in a lot of time and effort to raise him.”

Asked what she did different this year than in the past, she said, “we just kind of babied him a lot more.”

Alex Naylor, a Balko FFA student, received $800 for his Simmental steer.

The 18-month old steer was raised as an orphan, Naylor said, noting he had to “take special care of him.”

“I’m pleased with my win,” he said.

FFA and 4-H students weren’t the only winners at the premium auction.

Chris Berry, CEO and president of First Security Bank of Beaver, won the Black Jacket Award for his service and support of the Woodward livestock auctions over the past years.

“I’m really pleased to be able to support the youth of our area,” Berry said after accepting his award -- a tailored black coat. “It’s certainly an honor to receive this. I’ve been with the bank for 26 years, and all of that time we’ve been involved in the livestock show.”

He added that his bank was started in 1916 and was involved in livestock shows at that time as well.

Earlier in the evening, the names of seven scholarship winners who participated in the show were announced: Cooper Eden of Freedom, Kyle Fanning of Woodward, Danielle Litzenberger of Waynoka, Weston Miller of Fargo, Bret Horn of Waynoka, Justin Pfeiffer of Alva and Jo Eike of Fargo.
