Woodward, Okla. —
The Woodward Board of Realtors recently held a raffle to benefit the backpack food program of the 1st Christian Church of Woodward.
This week, the realtors presented a check to the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ for $3,190 for their backpack program and Pat Holmes with her brand new gun safe at Butch's Guns.
"Each year we choose a group to donate to and had seen an article about children going hungry and passing out when they got back to school on Monday," Cathy Brown, with the Board of Realtors said. "We just couldn't bear to think that a child in America could go hungry, let alone one in our own town."
Brown said after they saw an article about the backpack program, they had one of the ladies from the church come speak to them at their luncheon.
"Many of us couldn't even eat our lunch that day, just thinking of a child going hungry broke our hearts," Brown said.
The First Christian Church Disciples of Christ started their backpack program in 2006.
"The backpacks are distributed on Fridays and usually contain peanut butter and a drink along with other items such as crackers, cookies and apple sauce," Troy Hartley with the First Christian Church said.
Right now the church helps around 100 students in the Woodward Elementary schools.
If you would like to donate to the First Christian Church backpack program to help feed children in Woodward you can mail a check to the church at 1316 9th St., Woodward, 73801 and write "Backpack Program" in the memo line.
