Woman dies in Major County wreck

Woodward, Okla. — A Chester woman died in a 3-vehicle accident Monday night Major County.

Kathern M. Unwin, 73, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident 3.3 miles west of Fairview on Highway 60, said the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Unwin was killed when her Chevrolet Avalanche collided with a Chevrolet pickup driven by Shane T. Morgan, 41, of Cushing, about 7:30 p.m. on Monday, said the OHP.

Morgan and passengers Steven S. Herrman, 37, of Chandler and Mark A. Adkins, 29, of Perkins, refused treatment at the scene, the OHP said.

Morgan's pickup was pulling a trailer and in the course of the accident, the trailer's load came off and hit a semi driven by Edward D. Smiley, 44, of Pineville, La., who was not injured, the OHP said.

According to the report, Unwin was going west on Highway 60 and Morgan was going east. For an unknown reason, the pickup went left of center and struck the Avalanche head-on, the OHP said.

The Avalanche departed the roadway and came to rest in the north ditch while the pickup went off the road, hit a fence and came to rest in a pasture.

Unwin was pinned for approximately 2 hours, said the OHP.

The OHP said the cause of the accident was still under investigation. Trooper Darrin Lancaster worked the accident assisted by several other troopers, the Major County Sheriff's Department, Major County EMS and the Fairview Fire Department.
