Quinlan church donations benefit homeless shelter

Woodward, Okla. — A group of children from the Quinlan United Methodist Church are putting their Sunday school lessons into action.

The children, who range in age from 3- to 12-years-old, collected items throughout the month of January as part of a mission project to benefit the High Plains Outreach Center, said Jannelle Cole, a Sunday school teacher for the church.

“One week we brought blankets, another week we brought canned goods, and the next week we brought toiletries like shampoo and deodorant,” Cole said.

The items were all collected at the church, until being packed up and delivered on Thursday evening to the Outreach Center, which is a working homeless shelter.

Cole said this was the first year the church has done a mission project like this.

“This is a good way for the kids to learn about missions and helping those in need.  And we thought the homeless shelter would be a good recipient,” she said, adding “We talk in Sunday school about how we have nice warm beds with blankets and some other people don’t and how we need to help the less fortunate.”

However, Cole said it wasn’t only the children who helped with the donations.

“A lot of adults also helped donate,” she said.

She said the adults "adopted" a Sunday school classroom, helping the children in those classes gather items.

Cole said the entire church “was very responsive” in helping donate items to the homeless shelter.

Sue Everson, executive director of the Outreach Center, said the shelter was pleased with the donations made by the church.

In particular, Everson said she is pleased to receive the "at least a dozen or more" blankets included in the donation.

“We were getting low on blankets,” she said.

Everson was also excited that “They also donated toothpaste, toothbrushes and toilet paper.”

She said the donated items help out the shelter in more than one way.

“It means that's money that we don’t have to spend on supplies, and we can use that money for the operation funds,” she said.

This isn’t the first time the church has made a donation to the shelter, Everson said, noting the Quinlan church has sent several monetary donations in the form of checks in the past.

“It's generous of them since they are a small church. They are good to us,” she said.
